BMW F30 CarPlay Upgrade - Wireless CarPlay for 2011-2018 3 Series

The BMW F30 3 Series (2012-2018) never came with Apple CarPlay from the factory - but every F30 can run full wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on its original iDrive screen with the right module. The only thing that matters is which iDrive system your car has: CIC, NBT or NBT EVO. This guide tells you which one you have by year, how to confirm it in thirty seconds, and which Luxin module fits.
Which iDrive system does my F30 have?
BMW changed the F30's infotainment system twice during its production run. The year is a strong guide, but the visual check below is what confirms it.

Important exception: 2012-2013 F30s fitted with the CIC system use the NBT module, not the CIC module. The F-series CIC uses a different connection from the older E-series CIC, and the NBT kit is the correct fit. This is the most common ordering mistake on the F30, and our compatibility checker handles it automatically.
How to tell in thirty seconds
Turn the car on and look at the main menu on your screen:
- CIC: a vertical list of text menu items - Radio, Media, Telephone, Navigation - with older, softer graphics.
- NBT (ID4): the same list-style layout as CIC, but with newer, sharper graphics and a cleaner font. Still a list, not tiles. This is the one most often confused with CIC.
- NBT EVO (ID5 / ID6): six large tiles across the screen showing live content - your current song, a map preview, recent calls - that animate as you scroll through them.

What you get on an F30
The module installs behind your original iDrive display and adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to it. Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, messages and Siri all run on the factory screen and are controlled with the iDrive knob you already use. Your original BMW menus stay exactly where they were - you switch between the BMW system and CarPlay with a long press, and nothing about the car's interior changes.
Because nothing is replaced, everything factory keeps working: the reversing camera, parking sensors, head-up display, steering wheel buttons and Bluetooth calling. It is fully reversible, so the car stays stock for resale.
Does it fit my exact F30?
The F30 saloon, F31 Touring and F34 Gran Turismo all share the same iDrive systems and use the same modules. The F80 M3 is the same. The closely related 4 Series - F32, F33, F36 and F82 M4 - also share these systems and the same year splits, so this guide applies to them too.

Does the 2012 BMW F30 have CarPlay?
No. No F30 came with CarPlay from the factory. A 2012 F30 has either CIC or NBT, and both can be upgraded to wireless CarPlay on the original screen - a 2012 CIC car takes the NBT module.
Which module do I need for a 2015 BMW F30?
A 2015 F30 has the NBT system (ID4) and takes the NBT module. Confirm by checking that the main menu is still a list - like CIC but with newer graphics - rather than tiles.
Which module do I need for a 2017 BMW F30?
A 2017 F30 LCI has NBT EVO (ID5 or ID6) and takes the EVO module. Confirm by checking for six large tiles with live content on the main menu.
Does the F30 module keep the iDrive controller?
Yes. CarPlay is controlled entirely with the original iDrive knob and buttons. Nothing is removed or replaced.
Will my F30 reversing camera still work?
Yes. Camera, parking sensors and head-up display all continue to work exactly as before.
Does it need coding?
No. The module is plug and play - no coding, no software, no wire cutting.
